Telangana has requested the Krishna Waters Disputes Tribunal (KWDT-II) to enforce a 50:50 water-sharing ratio with Andhra Pradesh, effective from the water year 2024-25, while awaiting the final decision.
Telangana argues that an operational protocol for water distribution should be developed only after determining the State-wise and project-wise shares, and the current ad-hoc arrangement of 66:34 is valid for only one year.
Telangana also seeks a meeting of the Apex Council to resolve the issue, as stated in its May 13, 2023 letter.
The Government of India, in a response dated October 20, 2023, noted that the matter is still with the Tribunal.
Additionally, Telangana requests that water diverted from the Godavari to the Krishna be exclusively used for its in-basin projects, as per the 1978 agreement.
The State clarified that handing over projects to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) is not under consideration.
Telangana currently receives 299 TMC of water, while Andhra Pradesh gets 512 TMC. KWDT-II is resolving the dispute, with Telangana claiming 954.9 TMC and Andhra Pradesh seeking 1144 TMC.
Water release is managed by a committee with Chief Engineers from both states and a KRMB Member-Secretary, but no award is currently in place to guide water sharing.
